As many of the works in this installation illustrate, women have served as important subjects in the visual arts, especially for woodblock print artists. Less commonly, though nonetheless importantly, women also on occasion rose to prominence as artists themselves. Indeed, the multi-talented Otagaki Rengetsu, several of whose ceramics are on view, is one of the best known artists of her generation.

An exhibit of photography by David Burnett, Kenneth Jarecke, Dilip Mehta, and Annie Leibovitz that captures the speed, power, and endurance of Olympic class athletes past and present. The exhibit, prepared by Contact Press Images, New York, features arguably the most famous images of past Olympic games, trials and relays of these extraordinary athletes including Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson.

Local artists Tenold Peterson and Steven Oshatz', "Notion of Motion" features a collaborative installation using acceleration and movement as a subject for visual expression. The exhibit, an artistic complement to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, features two large painted compositions of men and women running, reaching 8 feet high and 28 feet wide. Larger than human scale, the figurative images are metaphors about the process of abstract painting.

Get a different perspective on shoes when looking at them through a child’s eyes. Kids get into the act with Art About Shoes - creating artwork and writing stories about the shoes they wear. Twenty-eight pieces of artwork from Cindy Castanette’s 4th grade class at Clear Lake Elementary School (Bethel School District, Eugene Oregon) are featured in this unique exhibit.

A group of twenty photographs by Burtynsky will be presented at the JSMA in an exhibition circulated by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston Salem, North Carolina. These images document the grand scale of commerce in which China is now investing. Fittingly the brilliant color photographs themselves are of a grand scale, averaging four feet by five feet.
