As many of the works in this installation illustrate, women have served as important subjects in the visual arts, especially for woodblock print artists. Less commonly, though nonetheless importantly, women also on occasion rose to prominence as artists themselves. Local artists Tenold Peterson and Steven Oshatz', "Notion of Motion" features a collaborative installation using acceleration and movement as a subject for visual expression. The exhibit, an artistic complement to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, features two large painted compositions of men and women running, reaching 8 feet high and 28 feet wide. Larger than human scale, the figurative images are metaphors about the process of abstract painting.

A group of twenty photographs by Burtynsky will be presented at the JSMA in an exhibition circulated by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston Salem, North Carolina. These images document the grand scale of commerce in which China is now investing. Fittingly the brilliant color photographs themselves are of a grand scale, averaging four feet by five feet.
